A $20 million water park

Construction of Blue Mountain Ski Area's outdoor recreational water park is one month away.

Groundbreaking for the Summit Splash water park in Lower Towamensing Township will take place April 1.Serfass Construction, of Allentown, was awarded the construction contract earlier this month. The $20 million water park will be located in a Resort and Recreation Zoning District, adjacent to the ski area on about 20 acres of the 58-acre parcel at 1660 Blue Mountain Drive. It will be built in phases, according to Barbara Green, owner of the ski area. The first phase will be the water park, and the second phase will include hotels/time-share, and more rides, if the water park proves successful.Summit Splash will be an outdoor water splash park that will include rides themed after historic areas of the county, such as the Lehigh River, mining, railroads and the rich canal history, Green said. The park is scheduled to be open in May of 2015. It will be open during the summer months when the ski resort isn't."I think it's going to be good for the area, good for tourism in Carbon County; that's our niche," Green said. "We have an opportunity to still stay very rural and have visitors every once in a while."Green said the park could yield up to 60 more full-time jobs and 400 part-time jobs."I'm glad that we can do it," she said. "It's good for the resort, and good for Carbon County."Blue Mountain Ski Area is a premiere winter and summer recreation destination that offers skiing, snowboarding, tubing and more. Not only does Blue Mountain offer Pennsylvania's highest vertical, but it also has the most trails in the state. From beginners to experts, there are trails for all ability levels, including three runs near or over a mile long.No matter what the season, guests can enjoy the newly renovated Vista Ballroom. The spacious event facility offers breathtaking views, and can easily host 250 guests for weddings, banquets, and conferences. For more information, visit
