Leadership positions contested in 11 Carbon townships

(Editor's Note: In an effort to inform our readers of various governmental offices that are subject to election/re-election in 2013, this is the third of a five-part series to relating to the election process.)

At least two leadership positions in each of the 11 townships in Carbon County are up for election in 2013.They include positions on the boards of supervisors and the tax collector's jobs in each of the township.In some townships, voters will also elect auditors.The following terms of office will expire at the end of the year and will be voted on in the May 21 Primary Election and the Nov. 5 General Election:Banks TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisor Walter L. Bobowski, six-year term; and Tax Collector Irene Makowiec, four-year term.Township voters will also elect an auditor for a six-year term.East Penn TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisor Herb J. Truhe, six-year term; and Tax Collector Thomas N. Beck, four-year term. Township voters will also elect two auditors, one for a six-year term and the other for a four-year term.Franklin TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisor Byron Long, who was appointed to the unexpired term of the late Larry Smith, six-year term; and Tax Collector Sara J. Keiser, four-year term. Township voters will also elect an auditor for a six-year term.Kidder TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisor Mary L. Farnschlader, six-year term; and Tax Collector Kim Ginopolas, four-year term.Township voters will also elect an auditor for a six-year term.Lausanne TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisor Edward S. Klynowsky, six-year term; and Tax Collector Carol Tulay, four-year term. Township voters will also elect an auditor for a six-year term.Lehigh TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisor Wayne T. Wagner, six-year term; and Tax Collector Teresa M. Barna, four-year term. Township voters will also elect an auditor for a six-year term.Lower Towamensing TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisor Ron A. Walbert, six-year term; and Tax Collector Connie D. Brown, four-year term. Township voters will also elect two auditors, one for a six-year term and the other for a two-year term.Mahoning TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisors John J. Weiczorek and Todd Weaver, who was appointed to the unexpired term of Travis G. Steigerwalt, who resigned, six-year terms; and Tax Collector Richard R. Swarcheck, four-year term. Township voters will also elect an auditor for a six-year term.Packer TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisor Grover Gerhard, six-year term; and Tax Collector Lynn Nyer, who was appointed to the unexpired term of the late Joan Hinkle and then won a two-year term in 2011, four-year term. Township voters will also elect three auditors, for terms of two, four and six years.Penn Forest TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisors Paul Montemuro and Alan Katz, six-year terms; and Tax Collector Barbara A. Ahner, four-year term. Township voters will also elect an auditor for a six-year term.Towamensing TownshipTerms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Supervisor Penny Kleintop, six-year term; and Tax Collector R. Bruce Reimer, who was appointed to the unexpired term of Mary Beers, who resigned, four-year term. Township voters will also elect three auditors, for terms of two, four and six years.Persons aspiring to run for public office are required to circulate petitions to obtain signatures from voters of either the Democratic or Republican parties in order to get their names on the ballot. Ten signatures are required.The first day to circulate and file nomination papers is Tuesday, Feb. 19, and the last date to circulate and file them is Tuesday, March 12.For persons wanting to register to vote, the registration period is open from now until April 22.
