An 8-year-old girl was seriously injured when struck by a car at a bus stop in Summit Hill at about 8 a.m. today.

She was one of three individuals hurt during the incident. Also sustaining slight injuries was the girl's younger sister, age unknown.A man was hurt, though reportedly not seriously, when he got into the path of the vehicle when he apparently feared the driver might flee the scene.The incident happened on Market Street near the intersection of West Hazard, in front of the Summit Hill Post Office.Summit Hill Chief of Police Joseph Fittos declined to release any names of the driver or victim until the investigation progresses. The driver of the car reportedly was a female.Fittos said the 8-year-old girl was dragged about 25 feet down the middle of the street after being struck. Her pink school bag was badly torn.A medical helicopter landed at the Ginder Field, about four blocks from the incident, and she was flown to a Lehigh Valley medical facility for treatment.Her younger sister and the male were transported to local hospitals.Fittos said he interviewed several witnesses to the incident and charges are pending.According to Fittos, the individual in the car was apparently traveling on West Hazard Street and turned onto Market Street. The youngster was entering the street from the Post Office when struck.He said the driver then backed her car up, and this is when the male got into her path.He said the sister of the child who was struck either brushed the car or was also struck.Lehighton Ambulance and Lansford Ambulance, as well as the Summit Hill Fire Department and Summit Hill fire police, responded and assisted at the scene.Lansford Police assisted Summit Hill police.
