Broken down truck triggers search

The discovery early Thursday of a pickup truck registered to a murder suspect and abandoned in the Andrewsville section of Lansford turned to be not as significant as first thought.

The truck was registered to Rene Figueroa of Allentown. Figueroa is one of two men accused of shooting Yolanda Morales outside the Puerto Rican Beneficial Society Club in South Bethlehem on Dec. 1.Lansford police Chief John Turcmanovich said early Friday that a borough man had bought the truck from someone in the Figueroa family, but hadn't had the registration changed. The truck broke down a few days ago in the Andrewsville area, on the eastern end of the borough, off Route 209 near a gate that leads back to a stripping pit.Witnesses reported seeing a man walking away from the truck, which then sat for several days. A search was performed Thursday morning after police learned the truck belonged to Figueroa."It turned out to be nothing," Turcmanovich said. "Later that day, a man contacted us. He said the truck had broken down, and he didn't have the money to have it towed. He lived in Lansford, so he just walked home. It could have benn something, so we had to search to make sure. We're all glad it turned out to be nothing."Figueroa was arraigned Dec. 10 with Javier Rivera-Alvarado, also of Allentown. Both men are charged in Morales' death, and are in Northampton County prison. Figueroa is held without bail; Rivera-Alvarado is being held on $2.5 million bail. The melee, which broke out in the early morning hours and involved at least 30 shots, also left six people injured, including Figueroa and Rivera-Alvarado. Police say there was a third shooter, but that person was acting in self-defense or in the defense of others.
