The structure of Palmerton Area School Board has changed upon the selection of a new leader.

By a consensus of the board, Director Tammy Recker was appointed as new board president at its reorganizational meeting on Tuesday.Director Charles Gildner nominated Recker to the post, and was seconded by Director Sherry Haas.But, Recker wasn't the only director nominated for the position, as former board President Barry Scherer also received a nomination from Director Darlene Yeakel, which was seconded by Director Clarence Myers.Prior to the vote, Director Susan Debski asked both Recker and Scherer to explain what they believe is important if they were to be chosen as board president.Recker said "open communication is key."Scherer said "I concur with that, and I don't know what's been lacking."Afterward, directors were asked for a show of hands of all those in favor of Recker, to which a consensus of the board raised their hands.Recker and Scherer then flip-flopped seats.From there, Myers was reappointed as board vice president.However, much like with the board presidency, the board vice president post also garnered several nominations.Scherer nominated Myers, and was seconded by Gildner.Recker then nominated Director Josann Harry, and was seconded by Director Joshua Smale.Debski then nominated Scherer, and was seconded by Haas.A majority of the board voted in favor of Myers.Also as part of its reorganization, the board:• Appointed Yeakel as Pennsylvania School Board Association Liaison for a one-year term.• Appointed Yeakel as Carbon Career & Technical Institute Representative to the Joint Operating Committee for a three-year term.• Appointed Smale as Carbon Career & Technical Institute Alternate Representative to the Joint Operating Committee for a one-year term.• Approved the 2013 calendar of regular monthly meeting and special meeting/board workshop meetings as presented.As per the 2013 calendar, the regular board meetings will be held at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month, with the following exceptions: Jan. 22, April 23, May 14 (budget presentation at high school at 6 p.m.), Dec. 3 (reorganization at 5:45 p.m., and Dec. 10.The special meeting/ board workshop will continue to be held at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, with the following exceptions: Jan. 8, July (no meeting), and December (no meeting).
