Fire scare at Palmerton High school

Firefighters from two counties responded to a fire alarm Thursday morning at Palmerton Area High School. Just after 6:30 a.m. the Carbon County Communications Center received an automatic fire alarm from the alarm service for the school. A short time later, a custodian reported smoke in the area of the music rooms and hallway to the cafeteria. Industrial fans were plugged in immediately to reduce the smoke. Fire companies from Carbon and Northampton counties responded to the scene. One and one-half hours later, the incident was declared under control. While firefighters completed their investigation, students gathered outside the building The students were then released from the gym where they had been held, breakfast was served, and all classes were held in their normal classrooms with the exception of the classes in the music room, which were relocated. Classes began before 8:30 a.m.
