Weissport Council tentatively adopted the 2013 budget Monday night with no tax increase.

Council anticipates revenues of $157,586 in 2013 and plans to spend $2,600 for council salaries, $720 for the mayor salary; audit fees, $2,100; legal fees, $4,000; tax collections, $3,500; secretary/treasurer salary and expenses, $4,950; engineering, $2,000; police protection, $$13,000; fire and safety, $3,132; code enforcement, $2,500; garbage collection, $34,752; public works, $10,500; street lights, $56,736; debt service, $6,528; recreation, $850; levy maintenance, $1,265. employer expenses, $2,738; insurance, $8,580; road materials, $7,098; and truck payment of $1,668.Council anticipates adopting the budget at a meeting next month. Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 and Dec. 17.Council went into executive session to discuss police issues. Weissport's part-time police officer has resigned, but council has not announced when a new police officer will be selected.Council is seeking to hire a part time borough worker. Council had selected two candidates several months ago, but neither worker showed up to work and council has deemed them as resigned due to not working any work shift.Council is also in the firewood business. Council has firewood for $25 a pickup truck load, cash and carry only. Horst said that there are options available to repair borough streets, but none are cheap.He said that Railroad Street should receive a wearing course and scratch course to stabilize it because otherwise the road will not hold up. He said that the road is broken up.He also answered a question from Sue Pywar, council vice president. She had asked whether it was possible to do oil and chip on White Street as a cost-cutting measure instead of paving it.Horst said it was cheaper to do oil and chip but the result is the road will not last as long.Horst said that he would prepare an estimate to oil and chip White Street."You will save tens of thousands by oil and chipping," he said.Presently, estimates to repave Railroad Street is $25,300 and to repave White Street, the cost is $100,000.Council member Tim Rehrig said that as a member of the Weissport Municipal Authority he attended a meeting with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation concerning the rehabilitation of the McCall Bridge. He said that PennDOT plans to resurface Bridge Street. He said PennDOT will actually resurface from Route 209 to Canal Street, Bridge Street to Dunkin' Donuts and all the way to Route 443 as part of the bridge project.Pywar said she was still concerned with access for Weissport residents.Horst said that he would be prepared to represent Weissport's concerns at a meeting with PennDOT.
