Firefighters battle large brush fire in Walker Township

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of Mountain Road in Walker Township just after 6 p.m. yesterday after a nearby homeowner spotted a fast-moving brush fire in the hills above their home.

Firefighters were quick to attack the fire as it reached high into the hills. Local residents could be seen helping firefighters pull hoses and spray water over the flames.Responding were firefighters and PA DCNR from Walker/New England Fire Company, West Penn Fire Company and Tamaqua Fire Department. Fire Police directed traffic around the area to allow for easy access of fire apparatus.Firefighters pointed out that no nearby homes were in danger. Approximately 5,000 square feet of brush was burnt. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
