Fatal crash on I-81

A 70-year-old Girardville man died during a one-vehicle crash which occurred sometime overnight Thursday.

It happened in a construction zone on Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township.James Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene by a Schuylkill County deputy coroner.His body was found about 50 feet down an embankment, away from the vehicle, according to State Police at Schuylkill Haven barracks.Trooper Vincent A. Laselva said the accident happened sometime between 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 6:40 a.m. on Friday.Kelly was driving a 2001 Maroon Ford Ranger and was traveling southbound on Interstate 81.Police said Kelly left the roadway and entered the closed construction roadway for an unknown reason.The vehicle proceeded to strike a generator and bridge abutment at the construction site, which sent the pickup truck airborne.The vehicle then spun clockwise in the air and came to its final rest, facing west with its front tire resting on the bridge.Kelly was found down the embankment inside the guiderail along what is known as the Burma Road.
