The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority kept busy during the month of October, meeting twice and attending the Tastes of Greater Hazleton Event.The Oct. 10 meeting was held at La Casa Dolce Restaurant, Tamaqua, with Sue Hummel serving as hostess. Her program provided information on ways to avoid identity theft.Members traveled to the Hazleton Health and Wellness Center on Oct. 21 for the Fifth Annual Tastes of Greater Hazleton event, featuring signature dishes and products from 23 Hazleton area restaurants and businesses. The "sisters" enjoyed the event so much, they have already decided to attend next year's event.A Halloween Secret Sister party was held Oct. 24 at the Sports Zoo in Lansford. Donna Gerber served as hostess. Members took the opportunity to dress up in their favorite Halloween costume and prizes were awarded in the following categories: sexiest, Patti Confer as an '80s girl; cutest, Helen Walters as Raggedy Ann; scariest, Cathy Santee as a bat; most original, Marie Umbriac; best costume, Donna Sterling as a nun; funniest, Mary Machay as a clown. Secret Sister gifts were exchanged.The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14, at the Hazleton home of Pat Kibler.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Seniors met Nov. 1 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 63 members in attendance. Vice President Nancy Gerber conducted the business session. Secretary Joan Ann Garber and Vice President Gerber provided their reports.Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Treasured Moments." Ruth Kemmerer was added to the sick list.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The group meets every Thursday at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.Thanksgiving dinnerThe Tamaqua Salvation Army will sponsor a free community Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22. Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is located at 105 W. Broad St.For more information, or to volunteer to help, call (570) 668-0410.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional and 10:30 a.m. contemporary worship services Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes and the junior and senior membership classes will be held at 9:30 a.m.Also on Sunday, the Twin Pines Senior High Retreat will be a day long event; the music commission will meet at 11:45 a.m., the monthly service at the ABC Hi Rise will be held at 6 p.m. and a resolution session will be held at 7 p.m.Activities for next week will include: Monday, "Forgiveness" study for the women's group begins at 6:30 p.m., drama group meets at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, encountering Jesus group meets at 11 a.m., Good News Club meets at the South Ward Playground at 3:45 p.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m., GriefShare meets at 7 p.m., "The Story" growth group meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, end times group meets at 1 p.m., Men's Fraternity meets at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, musician's rehearsal at 8:30 a.m., praise practice begins at 9:30 a.m.
