The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held a beginning Day Celebration on Aug. 29 at Lake Hauto. Marie Umbriac served as hostess. The theme of the meeting was "Spam Delights." Members prepared the canned meat in a variety of different dishes with Patti Confer's spam loaf voted as the tastiest entry. Confer was presented a Spam apron and was crowned Spam Queen. Everyone in attendance received a Spam related gift, compliments of the hostess.The first regular meeting of the new year was held Sept. 12 at the New Ringgold home of Wanda Keefer. The program included a display of Keefer's aquarium, as well as tips on how to start up and care for an aquarium, the differences between fresh water and salt water ecosystems, and the fish found in each.The Sept. 26 meeting was held at the home of Patti Confer in Hometown. The evening's program centered around yoga and self meditation. Members discussed the upcoming fall social and decided to attend the Tastes of Greater Hazleton celebration, where signature dishes and products from Hazleton area restaurants are featured. A possible bus trip to New York was also discussed.TAHS homecomingThe Tamaqua Area School District will hold its Homecoming celebration this Friday as the Blue Raiders take on the Panther Valley Panthers in their annual football contest. The game will be preceded by a Homecoming Parade, which will form at the Lehigh Carbon Community College Parking lot. The parade will then travel to the front of the high school and then to the football stadium. The parade will travel short distances on Oak, Spruce, Coal and Penn streets.The line of march will step off at 6 p.m.The public is welcome.Older and bolderThe Tamaqua Salvation Army's Older and Bolder sessions have resumed regular weekly meetings, which are held Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. to noon.October and November activities will include: Oct. 24, St. Luke's bingo, bell practice and more; Oct. 31, Halloween pot luck dinner, costumes optional; Nov. 7, a presentation on senior scams by Janene Holter and bell practice; Nov. 14 Thanksgiving celebration; Nov. 21, preparations for the Salvation Army Community Thanksgiving Dinner.This year's Hand Bell Tour will include stops at Sweet Arrow Lake on Dec. 1; Hometown Nursing Center, Tamaqua ABC Hi Rise and Majestic House on Dec. 4; St. Luke's on Dec. 5; Zion's in Lewistown Valley on Dec. 9; Jim Thorpe Railroad station on Dec. 15 and Union Station, Pottsville, on Dec. 21.For more information on any of these activities, contact Dina Depos at (570) 668-0410.Calvary EvangelicalLay Leader Terry Gerber will offer the message at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Laity Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley.Also on Sunday, a time of praise, worship and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.On Wednesday, a time of praise, worship and Bible study will be held at 7 p.m.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev.
