Randolph "Randy" Rabenold, a school teacher for 36 years, was named grand marshal for the 42nd annual Lehighton Area Halloween Parade.

The parade will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. The rain date is 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21.Julie Harris, chairman of the Lehighton Area Halloween Parade Committee, said the parade normally is held in the evening but the time was changed because of a conflicting community event.Rabenold, a lifelong resident of Lehighton, graduated from Lehighton High School in 1948. In high school, he participated in football, basketball, and track and field.He also was a writer and cartoonist for the school newspaper, the Leni Lenapian.After graduating, he and six friends enlisted in the U.S. Marines, serving four years. He served a year with the First Marine Brigade during the Korean War.Rabenold enrolled at Kutztown State Teachers College and then began teaching art at Jim Thorpe High School in 1957. He remained with the district until 1993, teaching all grades.He started coaching basketball in 1963 at the junior high and freshmen level. He retired from coaching in 1991.The grand marshal was inducted into the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and remains on the induction committee.He was the supervisor of the Kemmerer and Memorial Park summer playground programs in Jim Thorpe during the 1960s and early 1970s. He has been the commissioner of the Jim Thorpe Adult Men's Summer Basketball League at Memorial Park for 53 years.In 2009, the court was named the "Randolph 'Double R' Rabenold" court in his honor.Rabenold was named "Educator of the Year" by the Lehighton Area Chamber of Commerce in 1993 and Carbon County's "Veteran of the Year' in 1997 by the Marine Corps League.In the 1970s, he drew sports cartoons for the TIMES NEWS.He was a tutor for the Carbon County Volunteers for Literacy for six years in the 1990s.His "Alumni Art Show" drew over 500 people at a three-day event in 1993.He remains active in the Carbon County Senior Games.Rabenold was married for 53 years to the former Ruth Haas, who passed away in 2008.They have six children: Rebecca, an author; Randall, a former U.S. Secret Service agent who owns his own private investigation company in North Carolina; Rhonda of Allentown; Richard, an accountant; Ronald, a teacher; and Zach, a counselor. They have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.The honoree has been adjutant for the Lehighton AMVETS Post for 40 consecutive years, winning "Quality Post Awards" for the past 10 years.He served on the
