Stamp collectors can soon share in the celebration of the Centennial of Palmerton.

A Special Stamp cancellation will be provided using the actual date of the incorporation of Palmerton from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Palmerton Area Heritage Center in Palmerton. The borough was officially incorporated on Oct. 14, 1912.Peter Kern, president of the Palmerton Area Chamber of Commerce, and treasurer of the Palmerton Area Historical Society, noted that in 1998, the Chamber commissioned a logo and had a competition for a logo design to celebrate the Centennial of the founding of Palmerton.That logo design, Kern said, was incorporated into a postmark cancellation to celebrate the July 3, 1998, Centennial of the founding of the borough."Stamp collectors, and others, who are interested in historical memorabilia enjoy the opportunity to get a postmark on a very specific date in history," Kern said. "The post office for years has made available first day cancellation; whenever they issue a new stamp, they issue it on a specific date, generally a date that coincides with a specific date associated with a special event or a specific person."Kern said the post office makes available to local organizations such as the Historical Society, an opportunity to commemorate a local event, such as the Centennial of Palmerton."The Historical Society asked [local artist] Paula Zelienka to create a postal cancellation design that could be used to cancel stamps placed on envelopes on Oct. 14, which is the Centennial of the incorporation of Palmerton," he said. "However, since Oct. 14 falls on a Sunday, the local postmaster has been kind enough to arrange through [member] George Ashman to come to the Historical Society on Sunday from 1-3 p.m., so that people who want to have an envelope canceled on that day can do so."In addition, Kern said the Historical Society has printed 500 envelopes that have the Centennial design - an image of the bandstand together with the date of incorporation and date of the centennial - embossed on the left-hand-side of the envelope.If anyone would like to purchase one of the envelopes, or put a stamp on, the Historical Society will provide a special envelope and stamp for a contribution of a $1, he said.For more information, call (610) 824-6954.
