A local snapshot of suicide rates

The numbers of suicides among teens has been declining across the country, according to government data. Figures for the period between 1990 and 2010 indicate a very slight increase in Carbon County, no increase in Monroe County and a drop in Schuylkill County, according to numbers from the state Department of Health.

The numbers of those middle-aged, however, have increased in all three counties. The numbers of those age 65 and older have dropped in Carbon and Schuylkill counties, and stayed the same in Monroe.Overall, the totals for all ages who have committed suicide in that time period have gone up in Carbon and Monroe, and down in Schuylkill: Totals for all ages in 1990 were: Carbon, 10; Monroe, 14; and Schuylkill, 26.
