2 apply for mayor's position

Lukewarm interest has been expressed to fill the vacant mayor seat in Palmerton.

Just two candidates applied for the post on Friday, the deadline for individuals to submit their letter of intent, said Borough Manager Rodger Danielson. The two applicants were council vice president Chris Olivia, and volunteer firefighter Jereme Barkanic, who serves as chairman of the Palmerton Fire Company building committee.Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, at which time it could vote in a new mayor, and discuss any other business that may come before it.The seat became open last week when former Mayor Brad Doll resigned because he and his wife have decided to move from the area. In his statement to the board, Doll said he regretted leaving Palmerton, which he and his wife had called home for three decades."I've enjoyed working with the borough on various committees and on council, and, of course, as the reigning mayor," Doll said in announcing his resignation to the board. "This town has given me a wealth of experiences and fond memories, which I'll always treasure."Council President Terry Costenbader, who expressed his thanks to Doll on behalf of council, was then appointed acting mayor.Doll had been mayor since November 2009. Prior to that, he served as a borough councilman, and on the borough's planning commission."I've enjoyed working with the borough on various committees and on council, and, of course, as the reigning mayor," Doll said in announcing his regisnation to the board. "This town has given me a wealth of experiences and fond memories, which I'll always treasure."
