Slatington playground association is considered

An association may be formed to oversee the daily operations of a Slatington playground.

With that very thought in mind, a meeting of the West End Playground Organization will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Assumption BVM Catholic Church, 623 W. Washington Street, with the location in the church to be announced.Robert Stettner, chairman of the Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission, said the goal of the meeting is to "reform a West End Playground Association."Over the past few months, Stettner said improvements have been made to the playground area: New swings were purchased and installed, the basketball court lines were repainted, and new nets added. In addition, he said old, outdated bleachers were removed, and the refreshment stand was cleaned. At present, he said more security lighting is being looked into, and a street light near the refreshment stand has been fixed. Other improvements and activities are being planned, but the next step is to form an association to take care of the day-to-day operations of the playground, he said."We are hosting the event, and have spearheaded the effort to preserve the West End Playground as a recreational site, and to reform an association at the site," Stettner said. "The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission has been working with local residents and the borough to help improve the playground, and they will host the reorganizational meeting."For more information, call (610) 554-4099.
