Homework Helpers will begin at the Palmerton Area Library on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 3-4:30 p.m., and will be held every Wednesday from 3-4:40 p.m.Volunteer tutors will help your child with their homework and other assignments. It is free, but parents must register each child. Stop in or call the library at (610) 826-3424 for more information.Book SigningThere will be a book signing at the Palmerton Area Library at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, with local author Elicia Stein, of her book, "The PTA Man."Volunteers neededCan you spare one hour a week for a worthy cause? The Meals on Wheels program in Palmerton needs more deliveries. Deliveries are made from the Palmerton Hospital, about 11 a.m., Monday through Friday, holidays included. Each route requires less than one hour. If you can't commit for a certain day each week, perhaps you would be willing to substitute as needed. To volunteer, or for more information, call (610) 826-3141.Community mealA free community dinner will be served from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 365 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton. The public is welcome to attend and enjoy a free meal and fellowship.Food pantryFrom 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, the Palmerton Food Pantry will be open at St. John's Lutheran Church, 2915 Fireline Road, Palmerton. For more information, call (610) 826-4335.Historical society meetsThe Palmerton Area Historical Society will hold its regular general monthly meeting on Monday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Palmerton Area Library. After a brief business meeting, the program will be a panel of former New Jersey Zinc Company employees, chaired by Peter Kern. They will give an inside look at the NJZ, with stories and anecdotes not usually known. The public is invited to attend, without cost or obligation.Special Commemorative PostmarkAs one of the last activities celebrating the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Palmerton as a borough, a commemorative postmark will be issued on Oct. 14, the exact anniversary of the incorporation. A special "cacheted" envelope showing the Bandstand will be available. The release of these items will be from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Heritage Center, 410 Delaware Ave., the former "Tommie's" location. The public is invited to attend.
