Interest in a regional police study among several municipalities in lower Carbon County continues to gain traction.

By a unanimous vote, the Lower Towamensing Township board of supervisors agreed on Tuesday to sign a letter of intent to participate in the study.The supervisors' decision came after it heard a presentation from Robert Cohowicz, a patrolman with the Palmerton Borough Police Department.Cohowicz told supervisors that the study would come at no cost to the township, Palmerton, or Bowmanstown Borough.Supervisors Chairman Ron Walbert said he didn't believe it would hurt to receive information on the study.Resident Herman Bollinger expressed reservations with the township's participation in the study."Who is going to do all this work for nothing?Walbert retorted that the state would, but Bollinger remained firm in his stance."This is just more for the poor taxpayers," Bollinger said. "We have too many like me who are on fixed incomes."However, township solicitor Jim Nanovic reiterated that the study comes at no cost to the township.Residents Gerry Madden and Barbara Green said they were in favor of the study.Walbert added "I think the study is a welcome thing."Last month, Palmerton agreed to participate in the study.Also on Tuesday, Walbert noted that from July of 2011 to July of 2012, the township has collected a little under $14,000 from residents who are delinquent on their garbage bills."For the people who do pay their garbage bills faithfully, I'd like to thank them," Walbert said. "With identity theft, maybe we can look into bringing in mobile shredding units for the people who pay their garbage bills faithfully."Walbert said the township could send correspondence with the next round of garbage bills that go out in the mail.In other business, supervisors:• Announced it would hold a budget workshop at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the township municipal building.• Granted Caron Associates a three-month extension on their subdivision for a cell tower.• Granted new Cingular Wireless/AT&T a three-month extension.• Granted Barbara Walk a garbage exemption.• Agreed to advertise for line painting bids
