Coaldale resident donates piece of history to borough

Coaldale resident Joe Herbert doesn't want his town's history to fade away.

Herbert attended a public council meeting Tuesday to present a large, framed photograph of the huge chunk of coal at Josiah White Park in Jim Thorpe, over which he placed prints of Coaldale's historical landmarks. Underneath, the town's name is spelled out in gold letters.Herbert gave the borough the project as a gift, urging residents to never forget that "Coaldale is named for coal."Council thanked Herbert warmly for the gift.He said that people have forgotten how hard coal miners' lives were. He cited as an example that when a miner was killed at work, his body was taken home and left at the doorstep, with officials bluntly telling the grief-stricken family that he was dead. The miner's wife and children would have to drag the body into the kitchen, bathe and dress it and call an undertaker, Herbert said.Herbert said he wanted to make smaller versions of the project to donate to local historical societies and museums, and to his church. He said he found the old photos while cleaning out his house.
