The Lansford Borough Census Committee and volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, rain or shine, at the community center at 1 W. Ridge St. to review the procedures the borough needs to follow in order to receive the necessary block assignments to challenge the U.S. Census 2010 count.

The committee invites people to join in the effort.The committee members and volunteers will begin canvassing the borough immediately after the meeting.Councilman Tommy Vadyak said the volunteers would simply be walking down streets, logging the numbers of housing units, be they apartments or single family residences."It's going to be relatively easy," he said.The volunteers will wear identification badges, and there will be no need for any of them to knock on doors or enter homes."To make this time consuming project somewhat easier, it is requested, and required by law, that all properties be posted with the correct property address," said borough council president Rose Mary Cannon.The Census count came in 59 people short of the 4,000 population needed for the borough to qualify for Community Development Block Grant entitlement status a reduction that could cost it $100,000 a year in government funds that could be used to improve streets and repair and maintain the infrastructure.Carbon County Commissioner William O'Gurek laid the groundwork for the recount, and prepared the necessary forms, and Recorder of Deeds Emmett McCall rallied volunteers.Volunteers with Lansford's American Fire Co. No. 1 are also donating their time for the project."It is up to the volunteers to prove that the U.S. Census count was off by several units in order for the challenge to be successful," Cannon said.The next meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m., with the expectation that all blocks will have been covered by then.
