Teacher arraigned on corruption count

A school teacher charged with corruption of minors and unlawful contact with a minor, was arraigned yesterday on the charges, according to state police at Schuylkill Haven.

Matthew Ryan Pfautz, 29, of Blue Jay Drive, in Stevens, Lancaster County, was charged last week with the counts. He was arraigned before District Judge James Ferrier, of Orwigsburg, and was released after posting 10 percent of $10,000 bail.Pfautz has been charged for alleged incidents with a 17-year-old girl at the Pine Grove High School, where he is an English teacher.Troopers said the incidents occurred during the time frame of September, 2011, to May.Trooper Chad M. Smith charged that Pfautz verbally and via text messages encouraged the girl to perform sexual acts with him. She refused, the trooper noted in his affidavit of probable cause.Smith also stated in his arrest report that cellphones of the girl and defendant were seized and anaylized by state police. Found were 39 text messages sent between April 30 and May 15, with the girl having sent 13 messages to him and Pfautz sending 36 messages to the girl. The report also indicated the girl provided a printout of her wireless usage from March 12 to May 16 which showed she sent 168 messages to Pfautz and he sent 234 to her.A preliminary hearing in the matter is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. before District Judge Carol Pankake, of Tremont.
