Tamaqua Area School District students participating in sports and/or any extracurricular activity, or who have a school parking permit is subject to random drug and alcohol testing, as established in 2010. Random drug testing of non-participating students is also available if the district receives a parental request. Students must provide a signed parental consent form before participating.For the 2012-2013 school year, initial registration/testing will take place in the athletic center locker rooms of the middle school between 8 a.m. to noon, on the following dates: July 31, male students; Aug. 1, female students.Any student who cannot attend on the dates provided should contact Mike Hromyak, athletic director at (570) 668-1901 or mhromyak@tamaqua.k12.pa.us for other arrangements.Becoming part of the random selection process is necessary before participating in any activities.More information is provided on the school district website under athletics.Cressona BandThe Cressona Band will be making its final local appearance on Aug. 5, from 4-6 p.m., at Heisler's Dairy Bar in the Lewistown Valley.The performance is free and will include show tunes, marches, overtures and songs of yesteryear.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Summer Sunday school will meet at 10:15 a.m.The prayer group will meet at 4:45 p.m. next Thursday.Zion LewistownThe Rev. Sunny Stock will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will meet at 9:30 a.m.All young people, age 10 and older, are welcome to attend the Calvary Youth meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday. The meeting will be held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle on Valley Road.SS. Peter and PaulCommunion calls for August have been cancelled for members of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Also cancelled are the daily Masses for Tuesday, July 31, and Wednesday, Aug. 1.
