High school parking

The Tamaqua Area School District will have 69 parking spaces available for senior class members for the 2012-2013 school year. Applications will be available the week of July 16, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday.Completed forms must be returned to the senior high office no later than July 30.A lottery will be held Aug. 6 to determine which students receive a parking permit as well as space assignments. Students will then be notified by mail. Permits will be issued from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 20.Summer concertsThe Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the sixth year of its popular free Summer Concert Series, with mini concerts scheduled every other Thursday into September. The next concert will be held today and will feature Jeremiah Jones, whose genre is country.Additional events will include: July 19, Steve Brosky and Jimmy Meyer (blues); Aug. 2, Lizard Creek (Celtic); Aug. 16, Large Flower Heads (60s classics); Aug. 30, The Todd Wolfe Band; Sept. 13, It Takes Two (variety). www.tamaqua.net.Rush-Ryan seniorsThe Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met June 26 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 53 members in attendance. The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld.Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker.The meeting included election of officers with Schmerfeld and Becker re-elected to their positions. Other officers include: Nancy Godanis, vice president; and Gloria Gerhard, secretary.Birthday greetings were extended to: Melanie Weicker, Bill Morrison, Hub Becker and Thelma Carvello.The annual picnic will be held July 24, beginning at noon, at St. Peter's Church Grove.The group meets the second and fourth Monday of every month. Anyone 50 or older is welcome to join.SS. Peter and PaulThe Holy Name Society of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will meet today, at 8 p.m.First Friday observance will be held this week. Confessions will be heard at 7:30 a.m. Friday, followed by Mass and devotions at 8 a.m. Communion calls will begin at 9 a.m.July 7 will be Fatima Saturday. A recitation of the Rosary and devotions will be held before the 8 a.m. Mass.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Seniors met June 28 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 89 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided an inspirational reading.Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Independence Day." Vice President Nancy Gerber and secretary Joan Anne Garber provided their reports.A trip to Shady Maple and Vanity Fair is planned for July 30 and the annual picnic will be held Aug. 9.The meeting included refreshments of pizza and concluded with cards and social games.The group meets every Thursday at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.
