Computer workshops

The Tamaqua Salvation Army is sponsoring a series of free computer workshops designed to help participants become more familiar with computers and their uses.Conrad Flynn of Concur New Media will conduct a workshop on "Social Media" from 4-5:30 p.m. on June 25.The course offers a basic understanding on ways to use social media, including Facebook and Twitter, for personal and/or business use.Judy Gordon, customer service representative from Wells Fargo Bank, will offer a workshop on online banking from 10-11:30 a.m. on July 2.The session will include information concerning online bill paying, fund transfers and web-based financial services.On July 9, a course on basic computer maintenance will be offered by Rich Shupp of Schuylkill County Computer Services.The workshop will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. and will offer tips on ways to keep your PC running smoothly, such as interior cleaning, file organization, hard drive maintenance, updates, virus scams, back ups and more.To register, call Dina at (570) 668-0410 or email

This year's theme is "Dreams and Wishes."Donations of prize incentives, snacks and drinks are being accepted to help offset the cost of this literacy program.For more information, contact the library at (570) 668-4660.TAHS extracurricularsThe Tamaqua Area School District has released dates for its extra-curricular drug testing program. Any student in grade 7-12, who will be participating in any athletic or academic activity or club, or who wishes to have driving and parking privileges, will be required to participate in the district's random drug testing procedure.The random drug testing program was established in 2010.All participating students must register to become part of the random drug testing pool. Signed parental consent forms are required.Parents whose children do not participate in extra curricular activities may request voluntary testing for their students as well.Testing will be held in the Tamaqua Athletic Center locker rooms on July 31 for male students and Aug. 1 for female students. Anyone interested in improving the neighborhood is welcome to attend.Zion LewistownThe Rev. Sunny Stock will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will meet at 9:30 a.m.Also this Sunday, an old fashioned social will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Festivities will include food and games.
