A Tamaqua man pleaded guilty to 20 criminal charges was sentenced by Judge Cyrus Palmer Dolbin in Schuylkill County court to serve 15 1/2 to 35 months in a state correctional facility. Nine other defendants who entered guilty pleas were also sentenced.

Michael Howard Startzel, 28, of 45 N. Greenwood St., pleaded guilty to delivery of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance when arrested on Sept. 23, 2010, at his residence by the Schuylkill County Drug Task Force.He also pleaded to 17 counts of unauthorized use of his mother's credit card last January and one count of criminal conspiracy with an accomplice on charges filed by Tamaqua Cpl. Henry Woods.Startzel was ordered to pay $150 to the Criminal Justice Enhancement Account (CJEA) fund and make restitution of $1,149.01 to his mother, Denise Startzel; $516.69 to the M&T Bank; and $113 to the Bethlehem Regional Lab.Other pleasOther defendants who entered guilty pleas included:David Aaron Kovich, 27, of 220 W. Kline Ave., Lansford, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol charge was placed on probation for six months, fined $300, pay $100 to Substance Abuse Education (SAE) fund, $50 to CJEA fund, $50 to Catastrophe fund, enroll in alcohol highway safe driving school, undergo intensive outpatient treatment, and perform 10 hours of community service. He received credit for spending six days in the county prison.On a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia he was sentenced to one year probation to run concurrent with the DUI charge. On charges of disregarding a traffic lane and careless driving he was fined $50 plus $100 costs. Kovich was cited by Trooper Mark Demko when stopped last Aug. 13 on Interstate 81 in Kline Township.Helene Christine Grutza, 36, of 39 Vulcan Hill Rd., Mahanoy Township, on charges of DUI of alcohol and retail theft was sentenced to serve one month and three days to 18 months in the county prison with credit of spending 19 days in a rehab center, fined $1,000, pay $300 to SAE fund, $100 to CJEA fund, $50 to Catastrophe fund, attend safety school, receive outpatient treatment, and perform 10 hours community service.Grutza was cited on the DUI charge by West Mahanoy Township Patrolman Brandon Alexander, last Oct. 2 and by Mahanoy City Patrolman Charles Kovalewski, for theft of merchandise from Cocoa Hut, last June 3.Kyle Richard Long, 24, of 40 Water St., New Philadelphia, on a charge of burglary and criminal trespass on property of Bryan and Nancy Snyder, 430 W. Harrison St., Pottsville, last Sept. 28 was sentenced to serve nine to 23 months in the county prison with credit for serving 72 days. He also must have no contact with the victims. He was cited by Patrolman Kirk A. Becker.He also pleaded guilty to harassment of Angela Twigg, Pottsville Housing Development, and trespass on her property, was fined $300. He also must pay $100 to the CJEA fund.Daniel Lewis Casey, 26, Schuylkill Haven, on a charge of simple assault of his girlfriend, Kelli Joe Myer, 5 May Ann Hills, Schuylkill Haven, was sentenced to serve three to 23 months in the county prison with credit for serving 38 days. On a charge of criminal mischief was given an additional 12 months on probation. He also must make restitution of $2,975.60 to the victim. His sentence will run concurrent with a sentence imposed in Montgomery County. Casey was cited Cpl. Steven D. Kulkosky, state trooper.Alberto Gonzalez Jr., 28, Pottsville, pleaded guilty to defiant trespass on property of the Pottsville Housing Authority and possession a prohibitive offensive weapon as charged by Pottsville police. Judge Dolbin deferred sentence to a later date and ordered a presentence investigation (PSI) report by the adult probation department.Emilio Jack, 21, Pottsville, on a charge of DUI of drugs was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in the county prison, fined $1,000, pay $100 to SAE fund, $50 to CJEA fund, $50 to Catastrophe fund, attend safety school, receive outpatient counseling, perform 10 hours community service, and driver's license is suspended 12 months. He also must make restitution of $3,991 to Clifford Hilterbran and $561.59 to Theresa Plesnorski for damages to their vehicles.On a charge of possession of a controlled substance must serve an additional 12 months on probation and on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia an additional six months on probation. On a charge of driving while his license was suspended was fined $200 and for disregarding a traffic lane fined $25 plus $100 costs. Jack was cited by Pottsville Patrolman Brian J. Reno.Stephen Raymond Kaszmetskie, 44, Mahanoy City, on two counts each of theft and criminal trespass was sentenced to serve two to four years in a state correctional facility. He was charged by Trooper Scott Grochowski last Nov. 8 with theft of 100 feet of copper wire from the Schuylkill County Emergency Resource Center in Mahanoy City and by Shenandoah Patrolman Michael O'Neill, last Oct. 25 with theft of welding cable from the property at 116 Cleveland St. He received credit for serving 105 days in the county prison.Stephen Michael Miller, 20, Pottsville, was charged by Patrolman Eugene M. Yourey with possession of a controlled substance and by Patrolman Renee R. Galle with aggravated assault on Pottsville police was sentenced to serve six to 12 months in the county prison followed by an additional 11 months on probation, pay $100 to SAE fund, and $100 to CJEA fund. He received credit for serving 125 days in the county prison.Rasheem Shabazz Smalls, 21, Pottsville, on charges of terroristic threats, aggravated and simple assault, possession of firearms, and possession of a small amount of marijuana was sentenced to serve 42 to 84 months in a state correctional facility. He was cited by Pottsville police.Frank David Vannicolo, 22, Minersville, on charges of conspiracy, theft of a firearm from a private home, criminal trespass, receiving stolen property was placed in the Intermediate Punishment Program (IPP) and placed on probation for 36 months with credit for serving 27 days in the county prison. He was cited by Pottsville Capt. Richard F. Wojciechowsky.Each defendant sentenced must also pay a $50 per month supervision fee.
