Fit Day teaches importance of a healthy lifestyle

ANDREW LEIBENGUTH/TIMES NEWS A couple hundreds visitors and participants took part in the community-wide Fit Day event held over the weekend in the upper fields of the the Tamaqua Elementary School. Seven students with Mrs. Thelma Urban's 11th grade Language Arts class held the event as part of a class project addressing obesity and the importance of healthy eating. Some of the community activities and interactive competitions consisted of jump rope, hula hoop, sack races, three leg race, foot race, relay race, water balloon toss, trivia game, football throw, football kick, soccer kick, soccer dribbling, frisbee throw, free-throw, 3 point shot and a benefit walk. In addition to food and music, visitors were treated to visits or health screenings by health representatives or performers from St. Luke's Hospital, Andrew Miller of Flying High Bungee Trampoline, Tamaqua Subway, Kaisler/Sedlock family, Gloria Dillon Studio of Dance, Revolution Fitness, Tamaqua-Carbon American Cancer Society, USA Martial Arts, Tamaqua Child Development and Healthy Weight Collaborative. Enjoying themselves on a large inflatable slide are Fit Day organizers David Frederick, Troy Reinhardt, Martin Sedlock, Shane Mulligan, Dylan Houser, Joey Franko and Brandon Fogel.
