Thompson breaks out of slump

Rich Thompson was in a slump.

The only player that has been on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs roster all five seasons had gone 0-for-11 with five strikeouts before he entered Wednesday's contest against Charlotte when Domonic Brown tweaked his hamstring in his second at-bat.The Pigs' all-time leading hitter answered the bell going 2-for-2 with three RBIs, including a game-tying two-out two-run single in the eighth. In Thursday's loss to the Knights, Thompson (who got the start with Brown still out of the lineup) doubled home Hector Luna with the game-tying run in the eighth inning.Thompson laid down a bunt for a hit in Wednesday's win to help the Pigs start a rally."What I wanted to do is exactly what happened," Thompson said of the hit. "It worked out pretty well. Blanco got a good break and scored and everyone had to be running hard."Thompson then got caught in a rundown on purpose when Cody Overbeck hit an infield grounder. Thompson was out on the play, but not until Overbeck reached safely."I've theoretically talked about that happening for a while," he said. "Getting out after the guy reached first base. He ran me back. I'm not going to be safe at second anymore."Thompson still knows the Iron Pigs 2-1 start in May is hopefully going to help the IronPigs turn the corner."It helps," he said. "Teams are going to go through their ups and downs and Wednesday would have been an easy one to feel bad about and think about what could have been, but we didn't and hopefully we're on the right track."Thompson has been with the organization since Day One and reflected back on those first three seasons before last year's turnaround that put them in the Triple A title round."It was certainly nice coming in to this season rather than the first couple of seasons when everyone wanted to know if we were going to break .500 or not," said Thompson. "I think that question is now well past us."It was big to make the playoffs last season and meant more to us guys who have been around here a little longer because guys switch from team-to-team. To be here with high expectations and the team not playing well and then turn that around into a year where we make the playoffs and final was very satisfying for ourselves and for the fans, too.A month into the season, Thompson said it still remains to be be seen what this year holds for the team."We have a real strong bullpen, sort of like we did last year," he said. "Kratz was our home run guy ... and I think we have a little more speed than last year."I just want to see us play winning baseball. Everything else seems to take care of itself and I just want to be aggressive and make things happen on the basepath."No matter how Thompson is used, you can look for him to be smart on the basepaths and in batter's box.The seasoned vet is also the guy first-year players look up to.And since his major league career was just six games with Kansas City back in 2004, he's accepted his role but would like just one more shot in the big leagues.
