Marian Catholic Class of 2012 will present Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat this weekend. Showtime is 7 p.m. on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29.

The story of Joseph began in the summer of 1967. Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked to write a "Pop Cantata" for the Colet Court Music Department so that the school choir could sing it for their Easter end of the term concert. He immediately approached his friend, Tim Rice, to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. Rice suggested the story of "Joseph."The first performance of Joseph took place March 1, 1968 and was only 20 minutes long. It was such a success that other concerts were given, an album released, and in 1972, after some adjustments, ran in a London theatre for six weeks from a school hall to West End stage the show was now 90 minutes long.The history of Joseph in America started with a college production in the 80s, a seven-month run at Ford's Theatre in Washington, transferred to New York, off-Broadway, and was so successful that on Jan. 27, 1982, it moved to the Royale Theatre on Broadway.Although Joseph has been performed by both professional and amateur companies and by thousands of schools all over the world, Webber's 1993 production is the first to incorporate a children's choir as an integral part of the show. A "mega-mix" was added for an extended curtain call.
