Combining fun with community support helps the Western Pocono Lions Club serve folks with various needs. That is just what members and friends of the club did this past Saturday as they held an annual bowl-a-thon.

Husbands and wives, three generations of one family, visitors from the Tri-Valley Lions Club in Schuylkill County, and others, all did their best to knock the pins down at the West End Lanes Bowling Center, Brodheadsville, raising money for the club's charitable work.Lion Fred Klein, co-chair for the event, says the club earned more money this year than last and participants admit that the fun factor was quite high.Lion Chris Sweeney, perhaps the oldest Lion bowling, got quite a few cheers when he had several strikes and one Lion was recipient of the trophy, Most Upward Bound, having increased the second games score by over 100 percent over the first game.The club had held its regular meeting just three days previous and heard Melissa Reese from Eldercare Assessment & Resources speak about that organization's work.Several of the club members were featured in the U.S. Italian newspaper, la Republica, in an article written by Anthony Ciappina. Said members include Jon Evans, club secretary; Charlie Rush, president; Bob Argot and Bob Kelsey, both Past District Governors.They presided over the installation of Ciappina, making him the newest member of the Western Pocono Lions Club.
