In celebration of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week last week, the Carbon County 911 Communications Center and the Emergency Operations Center in Nesquehoning held an open house on Saturday.

The center, which is located on the Broad Mountain, just off Route 93, was open to the public to view the emergency communications systems and to learn how the center operates.It was noted at a recent Carbon County Commissioners' meeting that in 2011, the men and women who work at the 911 communications center handled 146,001 police, fire and EMS calls."Those jobs go from 0 to 100 in no time at all," Wayne Nothstein, chairman of the county commissioners, said at the meeting, after the commissioners adopted a proclamation for telecommunications week and recognizing the 911 dispatchers.Members of the Nesquehoning and Bowmanstown Fire Departments along with representatives from the Carbon County Animal Response Team and MedEvac of Lehigh Valley were also on site for the event.
