PV Golden Agers

The monthly meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers was held on March 26 at St. Joseph's social hall with President Ronnie Bazik presiding.The Sunshine report was given with cards sent to all on sick list. Sue Dopira led the group with a sing-along. Louise Searfoss won the Easter door prize.Names were taken for the upcoming annual Memorial Mass to be held May 14 at St. Joseph's Church, Summit Hill at 11 a.m.Members of the chorus are urged to attend the next scheduled meeting on April 23 to make plans to provide singing for the annual Mass.There will be no meeting on Monday, April 9.Summit HillShade Tree plansThe Summit Hill Shade Tree Commission continues its biannual tree plantings in the spring and fall in the parks and streets of the borough.The Spring Arbor Day plantings and ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 28, at 9 a.m. and will consist of memorial and honorary trees.Last year, the society sponsored trees in memory of police officers Francis McArdle, John Markey and James Whitehead. Additional memorial trees were also dedicated to the Summit Hill Lions Club, Joseph Pampanin, Michael and Anna Tirpak and the James Miller Family.This year, the nominees voted on by members of the society are noted historians Joseph Arner, Joe "Buck" O'Donnell and Joseph McDermott.The society is also accepting nominees for next year.Through the society's efforts, a Shade Tree ordinance was enacted by borough council in 1999 and over 400 trees have been planted in the borough since that time. Kevin O'Donnell will be in charge of the session. The second nomination of officers will take place at this time.A meeting of the Home Association will immediately follow the post's meeting.Borough councilThe monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Borough Council will be held on Monday, April 9, at 7 p.m. in the borough hall. Michael Kokinda, president, will be in charge of the session.LansfordAMVETS meetingThe regular meeting of the Lansford AMVETS Post, Lansford, which was scheduled to be held on the second Sunday of the month, has been postponed because of Easter Sunday.The members will meet instead on Sunday, April 15, at 1 p.m. in the post home. Commander Perry Shelton will be in charge of the session.A meeting of the Home Association will be held immediately after the post meeting.Holy Week scheduleSt. John the Evangelist Lutheran Church will hold Holy Thursday service at 7 p.m. and will include Holy Communion and stripping of the altar.On Good Friday a Tenebrae Service will be held at 7 p.m.This is a service of increasing shadows, remembering the death of Jesus.Vigil of Easter will be held on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Summit Hill.Easter Sunday celebration will begin at 8:45 a.m. Holy Communion will be given followed by the annual children's Easter egg hunt.NesquehoningVFW Ladies Auxiliary MeetingThe next meeting of the Nesquehoning VFW Ladies Auxiliary will be held Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Post Home.Nomination and election of officers for 2012-2013 will be held at this session.All members are encouraged to attend.CoaldaleFirst Congregational Church servicesA Good Friday service is set for 1 p.m. Friday, April 6, at First Congregational Church, Coaldale.The church will be open from noon to 3 p.m. for personal prayer and devotions.On Easter Sunday, services will be held at 9 a.m. The Lord's Supper will be available to those unable to attend Thursday's service.Sunday School will follow at 10 a.m.
