Remembering Wilt's 100-point game in Hershey arena

Dear editor:

Regarding last Friday's (March 2) Opinion on the 50th anniversary of the historic pro basketball game in Hershey, my twin brother, who lives in Mahanoy City, called me that day to ask if I knew what it was. I hesitated briefly, then surprised him as I got my memory recall and stated yes, we were in Hershey that evening to see Wilt score his 100 points. He chuckled and said we knew we would never forget this day.I was director on the YMCA Board in Tamaqua and we had a youth Basketball League for kid's in the 7th & 8th. grade, since at that time the only kid's that played were from 9th grade through high school. At the end of each season we would take the kid's on a bus trip to Hershey to see a basketball game. We once saw the Knicks play the College All Stars made up of College All Americans for that year. The year we saw that game, Tom Gola, an All American out of LaSalle was on the College All Star Team. He went on to become an outstanding Pro with the Philadelphia Warriors. On that historic night of 3/2/62, we once again made the bus trip to Hershey and witnessed history as Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points against the N.Y. Knickerbocker's. I, along with my brother and several other adults were chaperones for the boys on that trip.I remember it vividly and recall when getting on the bus for the ride home, I announced to everyone to remember this night, as they had just witnessed history in NBA basketball. I told them as time goes on, you will always remember this night. To this day, every once in awhile, one of those boys will come up to me and say, "Mr. Miller do you remember the night we all saw Wilt score his 100?"We came home through a snow storm, and were really concerned, but made it all right.Yes, it is one of those days that lives with you forever.Howard Miller,Tamaqua
