HERSHEY - It was a rough quarterfinal round for TIMES NEWS Area wrestlers on Friday morning as all four were defeated and fell into the consolation round.

Tamaqua's Colin Mashack, Northern Lehigh's Ty Herzog, Lehighton's Michael Balliet and Northwestern Lehigh's Levi Veppert all wound up on the losing end.Mashack drew Saegertown's Tyler Vath (41-2) and took him to overtime before falling 7-5.The Tamaqua sophomore scored a reversal with 10 seconds left in the first period after Vath scored a takedown to tie it at 2-2. A Mashack escape and takedown in the second period gave him a 5-2 lead entering the final two minutes.Vath was able to escape in the first 30 seconds and then took Mashack down with 50 seconds left to send it into OT.With 26 seconds left in the first extra period, Vath scored the winning takedown."It was a tough match," said Tamaqua head coach Jim McCabe. "Colin's setup was opening up his right leg and the kid kept on attacking that."In the overtime period, the kid was able to finish it off."Mashack needed injury time in the middle period when he got his shoulder stretched back.He wrestled Chartiers-Houston's Richie McGinnis (34-14) in second round consis.Herzog's 145 quarterfinal opponent was unbeaten Kyle Barnes (39-0) of Hughesville.Barnes held on for a 3-2 decision with a takedown in the first period and escape in the second.Herzog escaped in both the first and third periods, but couldn't get the late takedown to pull off the upset.The Nolehi junior faced Pine Grove's Eli Brill (35-9) in the consis later this morning.Balliet, who drew a tough foe in the quarterfinals in Fort LeBoeuf's Craig Cihon (46-6), was taken down and pinned in 1:02.He then wrestled Chartiers-Houston's Garrett Vulcano (44-6) in second round consis.Balliet reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3 decision over Mount Carmel's Brett Przekop (29-4) in the first round.The Lehighton senior broke a 1-1 tie with a point for a technical violation against Przekop and a reversal.Veppert and Greenville's Tyler Landfried (40-4) battled through three periods and two overtimes scoreless. Veppert chose top for the final OT period and had to ride out Landfried for the win, but the latter scored a reversal and three back points to win the tiebreaker, 5-0.In the first round Thursday, Veppert managed an escape and second period takedown before starting on top in the third period and picking up two back points. That closed out a 5-0 first round decision over Moshannon Valley's Dylan Ludwig (24-4).Veppert met Tyrone Area's Jared Beckwith (31-12) in wrestlebacks this morning.Bombers advance fourAfter dropping first round matches, all four Palmerton wrestlers won their first round consolation matches to live for another day.Josh Evans (31-8) took on Brookville's Trey Coinstable (23-10) and had a first period takedown hold up for a 2-0 decision.Evans took on Ligonier Valley's Joshua Patrick (19-3) in second round consis later today.Sam Oberlander (38-6), still smarting from the one-point loss to unbeaten Jarray Norris of Sharon earlier, used a last second takedown to score a 4-2 decision over South Side Beaver's Nate Recker(38-7) at 120 pounds.Oberlander took a 2-0 lead after a scoreless first period with a takedown at the 1:53 mark of the second stanza. Recker escaped before the end of the period and then escaped after starting on the bottom in the third period to tie it. That set up Oberlander's late heroics.The Bomber senior took on Saucon Valley's Bryan Israel (35-10) in the second round consis.Cody Grohotolski (31-8) managed to hold off Harborcreek's Kevin Nowakowski (31-11) for a 3-2 decision in the 152-pound bracket.Grohotolski held a 2-1 lead after a quick takedown in the first period, then escaped in the middle period to hold a 3-1 advantage entering the final two minutes. All Nowakowski could do was escape and time ran out giving Grohotolski the win.In second round consis, Grohotolski took on Fairfield's Clay Kocsis (34-3).Kane Kralik (37-4) looked like a man on a mission as he manhandled West Greene's Cody Jacobs (31-13) by a 9-2 decision at 220 pounds.Kralik led 2-1 after two periods and after a quick escape, racked up a takedown and a pair of back points to roll to the win.Kralik met Bedford's Jacob Krupa (35-11) in second round consis.Northwestern's David Tirpak wasn't as lucky as he lost both matches he had to wrestle on Thursday.In the first round, Tirpak (18-9) was pinned by Southmoreland's Jordan Kitta (33-1) in 56 seconds.Tirpak ran into Shawn Reynolds (33-8) of Cambridge Springs in first round consis and was pinned in 4:46. Reynolds had a 17-2 lead and had Tirpak in a pinning position.
