Going the wrong way on a one-way street in Tamaqua proved to be costly for two young men from out of the area.

Patrolman Karl Harig was on patrol at 7:10 p.m. on Sept. 5 when he observed a gray car traveling north on Pine Street, next to the TIMES NEWS building at 200 E. Broad St. The street is one way, southbound only.Harig conducted a vehicle stop in the 100 block of East Broad Street and detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the driver's open window. The driver was identified as Eric Gregory Schmidt, 19, of Schwenksville.A front seat passenger, identified as Ryan Michael Redmond, 18, of Ottsville, had green, leafy vegetable matter scattered on his trousers.The men told the officer they were traveling from Williamsport to Perkasie when they became lost.Patrolman Thomas Rodgers arrived and the men were searched and questioned separately. Schmidt consented to a search of the vehicle.The personal searches had negative results, but a gray metal cylinder, known as a bud grinder, covered in green leafy matter, was found inside the vehicle.Also found in the car was $4,450 in cash from the glove compartment, and a metal can. The can contained unmarked red capsules, 11 small baggies and a zippered bag containing $2,543 in cash.Schmidt was taken to St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale, for blood tests. The tests were positive for marijuana.The green vegetable matter collected from the scene was tested at the state police crime lab in Bethlehem, testing positive as marijuana.Schmidt was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and traveling the wrong way on a one-way street.Redmond was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
