Troopers: Demage was only suspect in killings

State police at Fern Ridge said that Greg Earl Demage, 30, of 1025 Center St., Jim Thorpe, was the only suspect in the deaths of a Kidder Township couple.

In a press release issued Tuesday troopers said that Demage was the lone suspect in the deaths of John Carnochan, 77, and his wife, Mildred Carnochan, 75, who resided at 33 Wolf Hollow Drive, in Split Rock Resort, Lake Harmony. Their bodies were found about noon on Saturday, Feb. 25, by township police who went to the home to check on the welfare of the couple.Troopers also officially called the deaths a homicide.Demage was labeled a person of interest in the deaths. Through the course of the investigation police learned that Demage, who was the grandson of Mildred Carnochan, had ties to the Northumberland County area, specifically in Snyderstown.Fern Ridge troopers alerted state police at the Stonington barracks to be on the lookout for a 2006 Cadillac DTS that belonged to the couple and was missing from their residence.About 8 p.m. Saturday troopers spotted the car along Snyderstown Road and attempted to stop it. The car sped away and the driver eluded police. About 20 minutes later Ralpho Township police spotted the car and pursued it.Following a nine-mile chase the car was stopped along SR61 in Coal Township with the use of spike strips that were deployed. After a brief standoff Demage shot and killed himself in the vehicle.An autopsy performed at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, on Monday revealed that John Carnochan died of multiple blunt force trauma and stab wounds to the chest.Mildred Carnochan died of blunt and sharp force trauma to the head and chest.The autopsies also revealed the two were dead between 24 and 36 hours prior to their bodies being found.Troopers have not released any motive for the killings.An autopsy on Demage was performed yesterday at Lehigh Valley.Results are pending toxicology test results.
