Franklin Township supervisors approve youth fishing day

Franklin Township supervisors approved a request by the Pohopoco Rod and Gun Club to host a youth fishing day on May 15 for youngsters at the Phifer Ice Dam Park. The event will include 300 trout, with some fish 16 inches or more.

Supervisors also discussed a second request by the organization that will include having regular stocking of trout at the Phifer Ice Dam Park by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.Larry Ahner, a member of the PTGC said that the idea originated by Scott Christman, waterways officer. He said that seeking the supervisors' approval was only the first step in the process, which will have to be approved by the state commission.Ahner said that stocking trout at the Phifer Ice Dam Park on a regular basis would give handicapped people, children and adults more opportunities to fish.A Franklin Township resident asked supervisors for relief from paying for two garbage bills because the family only sets out two bags of garbage a week. Rich Montlionico said that his family lives in a mother/daughter house, where two families live. He said that while there are two kitchens, they do not generate a lot of trash. He asked supervisors to reconsider charging for two households. He also asked supervisors why Franklin Township has a monopoly for trash pick up.Franklin Township has its own garbage truck and picks up residents' trash for a fee.Rod Green, chairman, said that Franklin Township spent $200,000 on a garbage truck and has to have all residents pay a portion or it would not be feasible.Sandra Gaumer, secretary, said that when the Long Run dump closed, it became mandatory to have trash pickup for residents as a safety issue."Other people complain," said Green. "It's not fair, but it's the best we have."The board approved retaining the law firm of William G. Schwab and Associates as Franklin Township's solicitor.Supervisors also approved:* Agreement between the township and Carbon County to purchase Narrow Band Equipment.* Change order to remove additional sediment from pond at Phifer Ice Dam Park for an additional $5,321.* Approved post-development traffic signal study for intersection of routes 248, 209 and Canal Street.* Supporting House Bill 1329 and 1685 regarding prevailing wages.* Sent letter to PennDOT requesting a new reimbursement agreement for bridge inspection by township engineer.* Requested 12 month from PennDOT for highway occupancy permit for View Crest Estates.* Approved request of Jukebox Cruisers Car Club to host car cruises.* Made a decision to request Pa.
