Lehigh Co. woman died in fire trying to save cat

HOKENDAUQUA, Pa. (AP) - Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say a woman who escaped a burning home but went back to try to retrieve a pet died in the blaze.

Officials in Lehigh County say the blaze was reported in the Whitehall Township home at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.Fire Chief Robert Benner said the woman, her husband and their adult son escaped, but the woman re-entered the building to search for the family cat.She was later found in the second-floor hallway. First Deputy Coroner Paul Hoffman said she was pronounced dead at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.Benner said firefighters did not find the cat in the house, so the animal may have been able to escape.The victim's name has not been released. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
