Tuesday evening, the community of Nesquehoning was again the target of an armed robbery, the latest in a string of similar crimes that have struck our area recently.

A little after 6 p.m. yesterday, an unidentified white male ran off with an unknown amount of cash after showing a female cashier a knife, then reaching in and grabbing money from her register at the Redner's Warehouse Market.This is the fifth armed robbery in less than two weeks. Police Chief Sean Smith, who spent a couple hours in the store with other officers studying the store's surveillance footage, described the unmasked robber as being a white male, five-feet, 10-inches to 11-inches tall, with an above average or heavy build, wearing a black T-shirt under a blue and white plaid long sleeve shirt, a white cap with two stripes on one side and unknown wording on the center, dark sweat pants and dirty white shoes.Smith also described the robber as having dark hair and a possible mustache.The robber walked around the store for about a minute before walking up to the cashier, showing a knife and stating, "Look right here. Put money in the bag." The cashier, who wasn't physically hurt, said the silver knife was medium in size and had a little bit of green on it.He then grabbed the money from the register. In the surveillance video, the robber could be seen grabbing into one of the two pockets on his plaid shirt.In his rush to leave, the robber dropped the money only a few feet away from the register and could be seen bending over to pick it up.The store was closed immediately after the robbery while police officers from Nesquehoning, Rush Township, Lansford, Weatherly, and Jim Thorpe arrived on scene to investigate.A customer in the store at the time of the robbery, who wished to remain anonymous, told a TIMES NEWS reporter that although he didn't see the robber, he wanted to praise all the police on their fast response and efforts in trying to catch the thief.Compared to photos and videos of other robberies, the robber didn't match any of the other descriptions from recent robberies. Police also noted that this was the first business robbed that wasn't a convenience store.Locally, the first armed robbery occurred on Jan. 20 at the Fegley's Mini Mart in Tamaqua and involved a tall white (thin to average build) male wearing a black North Face jacket, white bandanna and blue jeans. The second robbery happened in the morning hours of Jan. 26 at the Turkey Hill Minit Mart in Nesquehoning and also involved a white (average build) male wearing a black jacket, mask and blue jeans.The same day, the Fegley's Mini Mart in McAdoo was the target of an armed robbery involving an above average build white male wearing a black jacket, red mask, and blue jeans.On Sunday Jan. 29, a robber fitting the same description as the McAdoo suspect, held up a Wawa convenience store in Kidder Township.Police departments are urging the community to be alert and provide any information related to any of the robberies.On Facebook, a few anonymous residents stated, "Sooner or later, someone is going to get hurt," adding, "We need to find these cowards and put them behind bars."To view all photos and surveillance video of some of the robberies, go to
