Lehighton police averaged 23 criminal arrests per month

The year 2011 was a busy one for the Lehighton Police Department.

A report submitted by Sergeant Joseph Lawrence showed that during 2011, there were a total of 276 criminal arrests made - an average of 23 per month.Despite the high number, it was still a little lower than in 2010 when 320 arrests occurred.The most arrests came for disorderly conduct (55) and harassment (40).The police investigated 570 offenses in 2011, down from 640 offenses the previous year.Of the offenses, there were 111 complaints of theft by unlawful taking, which resulted in 10 arrests, and 102 calls for cruelty to animals, which resulted in six arrests.Other categories in double figures for offenses reported wre harassment (50), disorderly conduct (47), DUI (28), bad check (24), burglary (23), public drunkeness (19), and bad checks (18).A total of 706 traffic citations were given in the year, or 58.8 per month. In 2010, a total of 714 traffic citations were issued.Speeding was the most common infraction, with 430 tickets given. The other most common violations were obedience to traffic control devices (64), driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, 28, expired inspection, 23, and stop sign, 20.The police responded to a total of 5,553 calls during 2011, or nearly 463 per month. In 2010, the police answered 5,976 calls.There were 133 traffic accidents investigated by the Lehighton Police Department in 2011, three less than occurred in 2010. Of them, 16 were injury accidents, 72 were non-injury, and 45 were hit and run.
