With help from the quilters at The Quilted Crow quilt shop, a check for $1,300 was donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation on Thursday. The quilt shop is co-owned by Jane Heckman and Cindy Mengel-Smith.

"Lehighton Lioness Lions Club couldn't have raised the funds without help from the quilt shop ladies," said Brenda Green, chairwoman of the LALLC Pink Light Walk.Mengel-Smith said that in 2010 the quilt shop held a contest where a group of quilters were given a scrap of pink and white fabric and were asked to create a quilt block using it. She said that people had the opportunity to vote on their favorite block with "dollar" votes which raised $1,200. Those funds were donated by the quilt shop for breast cancer awareness in 2010.Heather Raby then volunteered her time to sew the quilt blocks together, with Heckman and Mengel-Smith, assisting with the quilting, backing and binding to create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind quilt, which because of its design and color, focused on breast cancer awareness.The shop owners then presented the quilt to LALLC, who undertook selling raffle tickets for a few months before and after the 2011 Pink Light Walk last October to raise an additional $1,300 through the raffle. Those funds were presented to Dolly Woody, executive director of the Susan G. Komen Foundation during the LALLC January meeting."This was really wonderful," said Woody. "I want you to know that this quilt project has the potential of saving the lives of many women because it costs $150 for a mammogram," said Woody. "There are many women with no health insurance. Believe me, we will be putting the funds to good use."The quilt was won by Kevin Stichter of Reading.
