Driver facing DUI count after crash

Published February 16. 2012 05:01PM

A Schuylkill County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) of a controlled substance following a one-vehicle crash. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the accident occurred about 10:43 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, along SR209 in East Norwegian Township.

Troopers said Cinthia Shaffer, 26, of Pottsville, was driving a 1993 Subaru Impreza northbound when, for unknown reasons, the car went onto the east berm where it struck a pothole. Shaffer then turned sharply to the left in order to re-enter the road.

At that time Shaffer lost control of the vehicle, traveled across both lanes and onto the west berm. The car then traveled along the berm for about 20 feet before going up an embankment. The car then traveled along the embankment for 35 feet before turning onto the passenger side.

Shaffer, who sustained minor injuries, was suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance and failed field sobriety tests. She was then transported to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville, for a blood test.

Troopers said the DUI charge is pending test results.
