Pleasant Valley captured a pair of Mountain Valley Conference tennis championships. The Bears went on to finish second as a team at the MVCs to highlight Friday's scholastic sports schedule.


MVC Championships

Stroudsburg edged out Pleasant Valley to win the 2012 boys' tennis championships, scoring 27 points to the Bears' 24.

The Mounties scored four first-placed finishes. They came from Jeff Norris (No. 1 singles), Gage Wyant (No. 3 singles), Billy Carangelo/Will Lynch (No. 3 doubles) and Nick Diecidue/Tom Shaw (No. 4 doubles).

Pleasant Valley had the other two first-place finishers. Jon White won the No. 2 singles match by a score of 8-4, while No. 2 doubles team of Kyle Tamaraz/Lou Bravo also won 8-4. Singles players Jon Walmach (No. 3 singles) and Vince Voulo (No. 1 singles) finished second and third respectively. Doubles teams Stevie Berry/Mike Hughart (No. 3 doubles) and James Osinski/Jeff Olah (No. 4 doubles) finished second and third respectively.

Lehighton was fifth in the team standings with six team points. The Indians received fourth-place finishes from James Sverchek (No. 2 singles), Justin Ziegenfus (No. 3 singles) and Lauren Burrows/Emily Cerimele (No. 4 doubles).

MMI Prep-Jim Thorpe

MMi Prep shutout Jim Thorpe on the tennis courts, winning 5-0.

Each doubles team of Shane Bleicher-Otto/Dalton Becker and Zach Nase/Louis Squillace managed to win one set on the day.

The Olympians drop to 2-9 on the year.

Hazleton left Tamaqua with a 4-1 tennis win on Friday.

The Raiders' No. 2 doubles team of Jarred Sharpe/Ed Krell posted the only victory of the day. The duo won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

No. Lehigh-Palisades

Palisades scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back, as the Pirates ran away from Colonial League foe Northern Lehigh 9-5.

Trey Lingle went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Palisades. Teammate Tanner Smith also had two hits and two RBIs.

The Bulldogs were paced by Kirk Bender's two hits.

Palmerton-Saucon Vy.

Saucon Valley scored six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to come from behind and beat Palmerton, 8-5.

The Panthers were led by Billy Desmet's double, triple and two RBIs.

Tyler Svetik knocked in two runs for the Bombers.

No. Lehigh-Palisades

Northern Lehigh routed Palisades, 16-6, in Colonial League play.

Shannon Weil had two doubles, a single, three RBIs and two runs scored for the Bulldogs. Sarah Frantz had two hits, including a home run, and knocked in three runs. Amber Thomas added a home run,

Saucon Valley scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to knock off Palmerton, 8-7, in Colonial League action.

Pleasant Valley scored all five of its runs in the final two innings and up ended Whitehall, 5-4 in non-conference play.

Diane Klapatch and Melissa Ejk each drove in two runs for the Bears (5-3, 3-0). Klapatch, along with Jordan Meckes, picked up two hits.

Nativity recorded 13 hits en route to beating Tamaqua, 5-2.

The Raiders were led by Krissy Bates, who had two singles and a RBI. Chey Bates also had two hits. Teammate Carly Sassaman had a RBI single as well.

Salisbury scored three goals in the first half and went on to defeat Palmerton, 5-2 in Colonial League soccer.

Kelsey Hadinger recorded a hat-trick for the Falcons (8-3). Teammate Marisa Strunk added two goals.

The Bombers' two goals were put in by Kylee Turko and Morgan Myers. Katie Rinfret had an assist.
