Jim Thorpe Borough Council President Jay Miller was honored as the Mauch Chunk Historical Society's 1987 Citizen of the Year at the society's Christmas banquet held at Cassie's Hotel American, Jim Thorpe. In addition, James and Virginia Smith were presented with the Mauch Chunk Historical Society Opera House Theater Award, given for outstanding and continuing contribution to the opera house theater performances.
