Golden Agers

At the Sept. 12 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers, a moment of silence was held for the victims of the 9-11 tragedy. Sue Dopira led the group singing patriotic songs, and an appropriate prayer was read for the occasion. Following the meeting members enjoyed playing bingo.The next meeting will be Monday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. There will be an indoor rummage sale held for its members and bingo is scheduled to be played.Summit HillFall cleanup plansSummit Hill Borough officials have announced the scheduled pickup of refuse and junk in conjunction with the annual Fall cleanup program.The refuse will be picked up on Thursday, Oct. 6, on the east side of town, along with Knepper's Trailer Court and East and West White Bear drives.Pickups on the west side of town, along with Laurel Drive and East and West Mountaintop roads, will be made on Tuesday, Oct. 11.Among the items that will be picked up are tires (no more than five), tire rims, auto body parts, refrigerators, freezers, vending machines, dehumidifiers, water coolers, heat pumps, washers, dryers and stoves.All items must have all chemicals removed from them and their doors must be taken off.In addition, up to 10 bags of garbage will be collected.Authority officeThe office of the Coaldale-Lansford-Summit Hill Joint Sewer Authority has moved and is now located at 162 W. Ridge St., Lansford. The office's administrative manager is Tonia Collevechio, who can be reached at (570) 645-2445.Food distributionThe Summit Hill Food Pantry distributes food boxes to eligible families in town on a monthly basis. The hours for the visit will be announced at a later date.The blood drive benefits the Miller Keystone Blood Center, Bethlehem, which provides the blood for the area hospitals, including Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton, the Palmerton Hospital and the St. Luke Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale.Tax office closedThe office of Lansford Borough Tax Collector Daniel J. Wynn will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 22. It will reopen on Friday, Sept. 23.NesquehoningVFW Ladies Auxiliary meetsThe regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 was held on Sept. 12 with President Amanda Breiner presiding.A letter of support to present to the Pennsylvania Historical Society for the preservation of the New Columbus Grotto was requested and was sent.Veterans and Family Support Chairman Cathy Sommers reported she is in the process of preparing the letters for the "Wreaths Across America" Program and will have more information at the next meeting.The annual Veterans Day Parade will be hosted by Jim Thorpe on Sunday, Nov. 6.A bloodmobile collection was sponsored by the Post on Aug. 31. The next visit is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 2 from 4:30-7 p.m.Several members reported they receive regular email updates from area legislators, and have responded to them concerning veterans issues. President Breiner downloaded information from the Internet on the Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen Programs and it has been given to the school.Members are reminded their candle sheets are due by Sept. 30. All were thanked for their contributions to the annual August picnic; good food and company was enjoyed by those attending.A Flag Retirement ceremony was held on Aug. 20 at Coniglio's Grove, with a good turnout and participation from the local Boy Scout Troop.District 20 met on Sept. 18 in Walnutport. District 20 Ladies Auxiliary will meet again on Oct. 23, at noon, at the Walnutport Post. The department president will make her official visit to the district at that time.The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at the Post Home.
