Tamaqua School District responsible for 84-mile round trip to charter school

A charter school in Pottsville found its way on to the agenda of last night's meeting of the Tamaqua Area School Board. The committee meeting was held in the Tamaqua Senior High School Library instead of the middle school.

Board members discussed a request to provide student transportation to the Gillingham Charter School, the first state certified charter school in Schuylkill County. The daily van run will encompass an 84-mile round trip. The district is responsible for the transportation because the charter school is considered to be in Tamaqua's district. Also on the agenda were the district's bills, totaling more than $1 million. Of the district's $25-plus million budget, approximately 11 percent has been spent to date. That includes $185,445 to cover construction costs for the senior high school locker room project. Also discussed were tax refunds for Tamaqua Borough and West Penn, Rush, Schuylkill and Walker townships. Tax exemptions are down from last year, from $8 million to $6 million. The tax exemption form for 2012 was also discussed. The school board will vote on the committee recommendations at its next regular meeting, scheduled for Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m.
