Stove pilot light 'flash' led to incident at assisted living facility in Lansford

A reported propane explosion Wednesday at the Edgemont Lodge Assisted Living facility in Lansford was actually a "flash" caused by a stove pilot light, according to preliminary information from the state Department of Welfare.

DPW sent a team to investigate reports of an explosion in the facility's kitchen on Wednesday that sent an employee to St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale. The employee was then flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.DPW spokeswoman Anne Bales said that, according to preliminary reports from the team, the facility's two propane tanks were empty. Staff called the gas company to have them filled. The company technician filled them, and then came back to light the pilot light in the stove. He found that a kitchen staff member was trying to do that, and that caused a flash which resulted in minor burns to an individual. The person was airlifted because of respiratory issues. The burns were considered minor.Facility administrator Corey Perry said that incident was just a pilot light issue and that "nothing really big happened."
