Garden club members take home prizes from Schuylkill County Fair

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its annual family picnic at Leiby's Grove, complete with a covered-dish dinner provided by members. A short business session was conducted by President June Leiby.

A discussion was held on a day trip to "The Grounds For Sculpture" in Hamilton, N.J. The trip will be held Aug. 23 and is open to the public. More information is available by calling (570) 668-3008.Club members participated in the Schuylkill County Fair, which ran the first week in August, taking home several winning ribbons.In the Floral Exhibits category, Mary Bridygham was the top ribbon winner, earning Best of Show in the geranium and wax begonia categories.Bridygham also earned first-place ribbons in the geranium, wax begonia, crested celosia, feverfew and tiger lily sections; second place ribbons for her coleus, English ivy, jade plant, rabbit's foot fern, plume celosia, daisy and sedum; third place in hosta; and an honorable mention for her zinnia.Under the Artistic Arrangement category, Bridygham earned a first place for her Easter arrangement; second place for the Fourth of July and Mother's Day arrangements; and a third place in the "I Do (wedding) category.Linda Leiby earned second-place ribbons for her plume celosia, zinnia and gladiolus; third place in gladiolus and pom pom zinnia; and a second place for her wedding arrangement.Judy Kellner took a first-place ribbon for her wedding arrangement; second place in the Valentine's Day and Easter categories; and third place in Mother's Day and the straw hat categories.Ruth Gerber earned third place for her Valentine's Day and Easter arrangements; and an honorable mention for Mother's Day.June Leiby was awarded first place in the pansy division and Evelyn Adams earned a second place for her straw hat arrangement.The next meeting will be held Aug. 30 at the social hall of Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley. Gloria Zimmerman will be the speaker and will conduct a workshop on arrangements.Members who wish to actively participate in the workshop are reminded to bring their own supplies.
