Brian Piekarski, a resident of Weissport and graduate of Lehighton Area School District, received a $1,000 scholarship from the National Association of Theater Owners.

To be eligible a student must work at a theater. Piekarski has enjoyed working at Becky's Drive In, Berlinsville, for two years.He will be attending Philadelphia University with a major in architecture. Piekarski said he would like to work in the field of residential architecture, but his final decision when he finished college will depend in part on the economy.While on a trip to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore, he took time to visit Chicago. The city ranks as his first choice to work because the people seem to consider architecture as a form of art."Everyone loves it," he said.While in high school he studied art at Lehigh-Carbon Community College and said he always enjoyed drawing and drafting class."I absolutely loved it," said Piekarski.He earned the Andy Knappenberger scholarship that is given by a teacher to someone interested in doing field maintenance for golf courses. He said his interest in architecture was the closest anyone came to fulfilling that requirement.He also received a Franklin Township Lions Club award, given to persons who began their schooling in the Franklin elementary schools.His first two years in Philadelphia will be spent in the dormitories, a school requirement.Since his sister Kristin preceded him in college, she had experience applying for grants, and she and his mother, Anita Auletti, helped him with that application process.
