Chess champion crowned at St. John Neumann event

Check. Checkmate.

Those were the words uttered by St. John Neumann Regional School students as they moved their pawns and various other pieces on the chessboard.In the end, student Wyatt Trantham of was able to capture his opponent's pieces to win the school's inaugural Chess Championship.The participants were Jonathan Hillanbrand of Lehighton, Samuel Arnold of Northampton, and Trantham.The championship was a double elimination, in which two losses resulted in elimination from the remainder of the tournament.The first match saw Trantham play black against Hillanbrand's white, which Trantham won. The second match was won by Trantham, who played white against Arnold's black.With one loss each, Arnold and Hillanbrand played each other next, as Hillanbrand prevailed, and Arnold was eliminated from the championship round.In the championship round, Trantham once again faced Hillanbrand and came out the winner.A final match between Arnold and Hillanbrand resulted in victory for Hillanbrand. That left Arnold and Hillanbrand each with one win and two losses, as they finished co-recipients of second place in the championship.Peter Kern, Chess Club mentor, said he was impressed with the performances set forth by the students."Each player is to be congratulated for mastery of the game and for adherence to the highest standards of sportsmanship," Kern said.
