Relay weekend

The Tamaqua Carbon Unit of the American Cancer Society will hold its annual Relay For Life event this weekend at the Hometown Farmers' Market on SR54. The event will begin at 2 p.m. Friday with ending ceremonies at 2 p.m. Saturday. This is the local unit's 18th anniversary.This year's goal is $90,000. One of the highlights of the annual event is the Survivors Victory Lap, which will take place Friday (today) at 7 p.m. A free breakfast for survivors will be served Saturday at 9 a.m.Funds raised during the event enable the society to continue its investment in the fight against cancer through educational programs, research and patient services.The public is welcome to attend.Soup socialTrinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St., sponsors a monthly free soup social the first Saturday of each month. The next social will be held July 2, from 4-6:30 p.m. Participants are to use the lower parking lot at the entrance to Founder's Hall.The public is welcome to attend.Calvary EvangelicalMoffette Tharpe of Lake Wynonah will offer the sermon at the 10:25 a.m. worship service Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.Instead of Sunday and Wednesday evening sessions at Calvary, members will be attending the Auburn CampCalvary will host a Good News Day Camp, June 27 through July 1, at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle. The first film will be 'The Bishop's Wife," starring Cary Grant and Loretta Young.Other selections will be: July 24, "Noah - The Musical," from Lancaster Sight and Sound Theatre; Aug. 28, "Wesley," the life of John Wesley; Sept. 11, "Billy, biography of Billy Graham."All films are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Admission and refreshments are free.Tamaqua SeniorsThe Tamaqua Seniors met on June 16 at the Tamaqua Community Center. There were 79 members and one new member, William Linkhorst in attendance.Invocation was given by Rose Valle entitled, "Little Things." President Jean Machamer conducted the business meeting. Vern Balliet and Joe Dietrich each received wallets for Father's Day.Joan Brown is on the sick list. Vice President Doris Brobst and secretary Joan Ann Garber gave their reports. Lillian Tomsko and Betty Murphy closed the meeting.Pie and ice cream were served, followed by bingo and cards.The next meeting will take place on June 23.New Life AssemblyThere has been a change to the Sunday schedule at New Life Assembly of God Church on Schuylkill Avenue. Sunday worship services will begin at 10 a.m.Sunday school classes will not be held during the summer months.Zion LewistownThe Rev. Sunny Stock will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. A children's service will be included. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:30 a.m.
